What should I use to tie up my hair?
There are various options depending on the style you are wearing, the amount of hair you have and your overall preference.
Silk Scarf:
Large silk scarves are the most widely used for tying up your hair.
Pros It preserves the style and keep moisture locked into the hair. They come in a variety of colors and sizes.
Cons: Depending on how much movement you do during sleep, you may have a hard time keeping the scarf on your head all night. If it comes off, and you wake up during the middle of the night, put it back on
Silk Bonnet:
Great for any style. Will not smash the hair down and will keep the style intact.
Pros This is a very good option if you are a crazy sleeper. Its stays on very well. They come in a variety of types: elastic, adjustable and tyeable
Cons If you have a style that is hanging out, very thick locs, or very longs locs, the bonnet will not work.
Loc Soc/Napp Soc
Great for most styles. They come in short and long lengths for those with long locs, and is great for braids and natural styles
Pros Mostly are made of silk, satin or lycra material which allows the hair to breath, control perspiration. One loc soc/napp soc can be styled in 9 different ways. They remain on the hair at night even for the worse sleeper
Cons Some may be too tight around the head with the elastic band SUGGESTION: flip the loc soc around for a more comfortable fit and it will still remain on the head during the night.
Silk/ Satin Pillow Cases
If you have a habit of not tying your hair up at night, don’t fret. If you have silk or satin pillow cases, this will help to aid in keeping the hair from breakage as silk/satin does not pull the hair, does not create knot balls onto the hair and the hair will retain its moisture.
Pros Will protect the hair against breakage and thinning. It’s great for those who have a busy lifestyle and tend to forgot to tie the hair up at night
Cons does not protect against pulling longer hair which will tangle if you are a crazy sleeper. Also, if you have long locs and have cotton or polyester sheets, you will still have lint in your locs and loose the moisture from the lower shaft and tip of the locs. Will not keep the style in place
No matter what you choose to protect your hair at night. Remember that it’s always best to tie it up. Using the proper head cover will prevent a host of problems to come later with improper hair care.
